Accidents happen when you have dogs…sometimes they happen often. Today we will talk about how to clean dog pee off of things!
I have little dogs with little bladders. They are very well behaved and they are good at doing their potty outside or on their pee pads but sometimes they miss the pads. Little Lily has an incontinence problem so she dribbles little drops of pee all over the place.
The vinyl plank has held up very well but there can be a lingering urine smell at times.
I have experimented with many different cleaning commercial and homemade cleaning products. I am about to share with you my very favorite urine cleaning solutions!
Please note results can vary depending on the mess and the surface. Always test your chosen cleaning solution in an inconspicuous spot to make sure you don’t ruin your flooring.
I have had great success with Simple Solution. It has worked great for me on all surfaces. I buy the stuff by the gallon and fill an empty spray bottle.
This is my favorite enzymatic cleaner to use on carpet and upholstery.
When using on carpet, I flush plain water through the urine stain with my little hand held carpet shampooer. I don’t use any shampoo, only water. You can also achieve this by pouring some water on the stain and blotting it well with a clean white rag or paper towels.
When using this product, you will get the best result by carefully following the directions. On carpet and furniture, it’s not a quick fix. It takes time for the enzymes to eat the urine and sometimes it takes a couple of applications.
It also works great on poop and vomit stains. I very carefully scrape the solid mess off the carpet with a plastic butter knife, lightly spray the stain with Simple Solution and blot the stain with a white rag or paper towel until the stain is gone.
I also use Simple Solution to clean dog pee off of the tile floor too. Just wipe up the excess liquid, spray the area with Simple Solution, let it sit for a couple of minutes and wipe dry.
This next solution is one I throw together when I want to clean the area a little deeper. I use this solution on my tile floor only, not the carpet.
- Mop or rag
- Mop bucket
- Measuring cup
- Dawn dish detergent (the plain blue kind)
- White vinegar (the cooking kind, not the cleaning kind)
- Lemon essential oil (or lime or orange)
- Rubber gloves (if you plan on cleaning with a rag rather than a mop)
And then you will:
- Fill your mop bucket about 3/4 with very hot water
- While you are filling the bucket with water, add a few drops of Dawn
- Add a splash of white vinegar
- Add 10 – 20 drops of lemon essential oil
Wipe up all the pee and apply to the soiled area with your mop or rag. If you are using a rag, please wear rubber gloves because the vinegar is very irritating to the skin. Let it air dry so the vinegar has a chance to work its magic on the urine.
I find that after cleaning the tile with this homemade cleaning solution, the floor is very squeaky clean and fresh…until the next accident!
I use Nature’s Miracle Disinfectant Floor Cleaner a couple of times a month to really disinfect and clean the floor. This stuff doesn’t smell very good but it really works!
So, there you have it folks, my favorite ways of how to clean dog pee off of things!
